What is NARCAN?

Nalaxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan, is a nasal spray used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Used virtually every day to save lives, Narcan is one of the key tools of harm reduction.

Bystanders play a vital role in reducing overdoses by carrying Narcan or accessing it in public places. Many first responders — police, firefighters, and EMTs — also carry Narcan, keeping them prepared for when they encounter overdoses in the field.

Opioid rescue kits including Narcan have been installed in public buildings like city halls and libraries around Hampshire and Hampden counties. These can be used by staff or bystanders when someone experiences an overdose.

Rescue kits are also available to businesses concerned about employees or customers who may be at risk.

We believe it’s a good idea for people who use opioids and their families to keep a supply of Narcan. It should be in a place that’s easy to access so it can be administered quickly if there is an overdose.
